From Our Pastor's Heart
      I got up off the couch and turned the TV off, one of my favorite weekly mystery
shows had gone into the garbage and I refused to watch it any longer. Since I am trying
to cut down on my TV watching; more and more sports is all I am watching. Now that is
not all bad, but it sure cuts down on the amount of time that Kathryn and I spend
watching TV, she is not really into sports all that much. Two comments from Paul seemed
to be always on my mind when it comes to watching TV. Romans 12:2 “Do not conform
any longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
heart.”And the other, close to the end of his letter to the church in Philippi, 4:8 “Finally
brothers, whatever is true, whatever in noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy –
think about such things.” Since our mind runs on what we feed it, a lot of what is on TV is
junk food with no nutritional value at all.

  Paul also says to the church in Rome in the beginning of his letter,” I am not ashamed
of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation of everyone who believes…” (Rom. 1:
16) And there is the issue with TV and so much else in our society, fewer and fewer
people believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. It cramps their style too much,
believing in Jesus Christ means that He is the center of the universe not them, and that
is totally against our self-centered mindset in today’s culture. And TV encourages a self-
centered mindset, not to mention promoting immorality and sin every few minutes. I hope
a lot of you have the moral strength to get up out of your chair and turn off the TV and
do something else with your family that brings you all closer together.
